How long should it take to get disability benefits after I apply?
Social Security Disability FAQ Video Transcription
Usually when you file your disability claim, it takes 4-6 weeks to hear back from anyone, and usually they will turn you down. That’s when you hire a lawyer. The next step is to file for reconsideration, which will usually take another 2-6 weeks to hear back from anyone, and again, you will usually be turned down. That’s when you file for an appeal to the office of disability, adjudication, and review, which is where you get a judge assigned to your case. This is where you are most likely to win your case. Depending on how crowded the docket is, this can take anywhere from 9-15 months.
